Birka spearheads type E1 according to Petersen

Spearheads, type E 1

According to: Lena Thålin-Bergman, "Übersicht der Speerspitzen von Birka" (In: Greta Arwidsson (ed.) Birka II: 2. Systematische Analysen der Gráberfunde. Stockholm: Almqvist & Wiksell, 1986, 16-17)

This group includes tips that have not ornament or traces of it on the socket. They belong to the following graves: Bj 391, 477, 510, 542, 547, 558, 560, 643, 801, 855, 894B, 985 and 1151. Most are slightly damaged at the top and / or at the spout, the whole length may, however, be maintained at Bj 542, 558, 560, 801, 855, 894B and 95. The length is between 360 and 572 mm, the width between 25 and 36 mm. The widest are the spears Bj 542 with 36 mm, as well as Bj 643 and 801 with 35 mm width.

The neck is almost always pronounced oval with much greater width than height. The spears profiles  are on average 18 x 12 mm

The majority of these spearheads show on the X-ray image a characteristic damascene of two concurrent angle bands, which meet on half the length of the sheet, where the actual cutting edge attaches. The length of the damascene section lies between 115 and 270 mm, however, there seems to be no absolute relationship between the total length of the tip and the length of damascene.

Three type E 1 spearheads seem to have no damascene. Of these, one (Bj 391) lay in a burnt grave, while all the others came from chamber or body graves. The sprear Bj 391 was about half a meter long, rather slender and with a medium strong neck (17 x 14mm). In the case of Bj 560, too, apparently the damascene is missing, but its profile is in good agreement with the damascene specimens of this variant, as well with the top Bj 985, which is long and slender (length 460 mm, width 25 mm)
