Birka spearheads type E2 and E3 according to Petersen

Spearheads, type E2

E spearheads with smooth, round socket are found in the graves Bj 495, 725, 830 and 1098, of which the latter two are obtained in full length. Both are pretty slim. As in the case of E1, the neck is generally approximately oval, with profiles between 15 × 13 mm and 13 × 11 mm. The socket, however, appears to be somewhat longer at the type E2 spearheads, with about 120 mm at the two measurable tips, while in type E1 the average value is at 100-105 mm (at least 77 mm and max 115 mm). Two spearheads, Bj 725 and Bj 830, show a distinct, longitudinal cutting edge joint of the same kind as in Bj 957.

Spearheads, type E3

These spearheads have slender, short blades with slashed edges: Bj 713, 727, 765, 830, 991A and 1069. Only the small, narrow tip of Bj 765 is decorated with tortuous copper and silver wire, as are the type I tips Bj 644 and 731. The remaining tips are undecorated. The difference between these tips and smaller E2 type specimens resides in the segmental bevel on the "front" and "reverse" sides of the round socket on either side of the spine, as formed by the type K blade grinding. Because of corrosion, this pull does not always stand out clearly; however, a sharp transition from round to rhombic cross-section should be noted.
